Maingear Shift Limited Edition DIY Kit

By Matthew Murray

How much style are you willing to pay for? If you're in the market for a PC case and you're thinking "high end," this is a question Maingear wants you to consider seriously. The company's Shift Limited Edition DIY Kit does not up the ante Thermaltake previously set a couple of years back with its original Level 10 , which was priced at $799. No, the Shift rings in at only (only?) $649 direct, which is only enough to make it the second most expensive case we've seen. This isn't to say that it's not worth the money. Like the Level 10, this is a spectacular piece of hardware that's equally worthy of our Editors' Choice Award and the attention of die-hard enthusiasts?assuming they have the piles of spare cash on hand needed to purchase it.

It's worth mentioning at this point that we've covered the Shift before in a slightly different guise. When first this case, with its unusual Vertical Exhaust cooling technology that vents heat out of its top panel rather than its rear (to better take advantage of heat's natural tendency to rise), appeared in 2010, it was in the form of a finished desktop. We've reviewed it twice?in its original form, and a few months ago in another Editors' Choice?winning Super Stock configuration?and been impressed with it both times for its sturdiness, its immense but understated attractiveness, and its depth of features. So it should probably go without saying that this bare version is every bit as good as the others, and even better for the intrepid DIYers who are unwilling to settle for any company's idea of what their ideal system should be.

Should you happen to need a refresher, the Shift is a full-tower case measuring 24 by 8.6 by 21.5 inches (HWD) and clad entirely in brushed black aluminum. It bears a look more austere, mature, and even minimalistic than most cases on the market, but it also radiates authority. A vertically oriented Maingear logo is stamped into the bottom half of the front panel; a swing-out door hides the top section and the four external drive bays (three 5.25-inch, one 3.5-inch) located there. The power and reset buttons are placed right between the sections; the rest of the front-panel connectivity options are found in a pop-up unit on the front section of the top panel: a multiformat card reader, two USB 3.0 ports, one FireWire 800 port, and headphone and microphone jacks.? All of this is fairly standard.

What has always distinguished the Shift is the rest of its design. It was crafted to hide most of your unsightly cables (whether for your mouse or to the wall outlet), and maintain the cleanest lines possible across the maximum number of surfaces. Remove the top panel (you'll need to unscrew it before you can pull it off) to reveal, in addition to the traditional "rear-panel" paraphernalia (seven expansion slots, grille covering the port for the exhaust fan, additional vents), two switches that lock in place the side panels (both of which are emblazoned with Maingear logos). Just press one to release the top part of the corresponding door, then lift it off to gain access to the inside. Once you do, you'll discover an intricately, even beautifully, designed interior that facilitates building as few other cases do.

Cut into the motherboard tray are plenty of different standoff holes for accommodating motherboards of numerous form factors, a generous hole for simplifying the addition of an aftermarket heat sink (which you probably won't need?more on that in a minute), and a few grommeted channels for routing cables and wires out of the way to improve airflow and cleanliness (though these are on the small side). There's also a thick barrier between the motherboard area and the vented power supply bay, containing one fan dedicated to cooling the video cards and motherboard positioned immediately above it and a second located just below the 3.5-inch drive bays.

These bays are vertically oriented and contain sturdy removable caddies that provide unusually robust homes for your hard and solid-state drives. We have no problems with these, although we should point out that the external bays are not tool-free: You'll need a Phillips screwdriver to secure your drives in them.

Just in case all this isn't enough for you, Maingear has thrown in one more extra: its Epic 180 closed-loop liquid cooler. Given that Intel's Sandy Bridge?Extreme CPUs (like the Core i7-3960X Extreme Edition , Core i7-3930K?, and Core i7-3820 ) don't come with their own coolers, this is a thoughtful bonus that adds much-welcome value to the Shift. It's smartly configured, too, with the radiator positioned just below the 3.5-inch drives so the fan wicks heat directly out the vented floor panel and keeps your build almost entirely mess-free.

Still, $649 is $649?which is an enormous hurdle for an empty case. This means that this Maingear Shift Limited Edition DIY Kit is an obvious vanity buy?not that there's anything wrong with that. If it lacks the one-in-a-million flair of the Level 10 (which Thermaltake created with BMW Group DesignworksUSA), it's in some ways even more friendly to those who plan on not just building but also rebuilding their PCs. You need to give serious thought to what you're doing before pulling out your credit card and risking its running away in terror, but if you're positive you can't be happy with a less-expensive case?like two of our current sub-$200 favorites from Thermaltake, the Chaser MK-I ?and Armor Revo Snow Edition ?then we're sure you'll love the Shift.

19 killed in Iraq attacks ahead of Ramadan end

A wave of attacks across Iraq on Thursday killed at least 19 people and left 104 wounded, security and medical officials said, updating an earlier toll.

The attacks struck in nine different cities just days before the beginning of Eid al-Fitr, the festival that marks the end of the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

Officials reported at least a dozen bomb blasts and one shooting in six different cities, a day after unrest left 13 dead, taking the overall death toll from nationwide unrest so far this month to 153.

In the north Baghdad neighbourhood of Husseiniyah, a car bomb killed at least six people and wounded 26, according to an interior ministry official and a medical source.

Meanwhile in the town of Daquq, north of Baghdad in Kirkuk province, a suicide attacker killed six policemen and wounded 25 people when he blew himself up at a counter-terrorism department's compound, according to provincial police Brigadier General Sarhad Qader.

Attacks in the towns of Al-Garma, Tuz Khurmatu, Kirkuk and Dibis left seven others dead, officials said.

In the disputed, ethnically-mixed northern city of Kirkuk, four car bombs exploded within 45 minutes, according to a police official and Dr Karim Wali at the city's main hospital.

Among those wounded were an unspecified number of security forces members, the officials said.

A day earlier, 13 people were killed in attacks north of Baghdad, the deadliest of which were in restive Diyala province.

On Monday, British security firm AKE Group warned that "terrorists in Iraq may be planning mass casualty explosive attacks against large gatherings of civilians to mark the end of Ramadan later this week."

"We haven't received any specific intelligence on the matter but they (insurgents) may be 'saving up' their willing bombers for the closing period of the month, due around 17-18 August," AKE analyst John Drake said.

The 153 people killed this month include 67 security force members, according to an AFP tally based on security and medical sources.

While violence has decreased from its peak in 2006 and 2007, attacks remain common across Iraq. There were attacks on 27 of the 31 days in July, and there has been at least one shooting or bombing every day this month.

Official figures put the number of people killed in attacks in July at 325, the highest monthly death toll since August 2010.

Caterer working at Obama event wears Romney shirt

Ross Murty (Olivier Knox)

"Government didn't build my business, I DID."

That was the pro-Mitt Romney message on the T-shirt Davenport, Iowa, deli co-owner Ross Murty wore when he went to work on Wednesday. Nothing unusual, especially in a campaign season?except he was serving food to the traveling White House press corps during President Barack Obama's visit to the town.

It's a reference to Obama's remarks at a July rally in Virginia, where he argued that government investments in infrastructure and education as well as "this unbelievable American system" made it possible for entrepreneurs to succeed. Romney's campaign has turned those remarks into a potent political attack.

Murty gamely posed behind a pasta dish and pulled pork for pictures by reporters accompanying the president on his trip. Obama campaign aides did not comment on the record.

While the White House travel office arranges for food for traveling journalists, media outlets foot the bill.

The Des Moines Register reports that Murty's business partner is a Democrat.

Group: Scrabble player caught cheating at US event

(AP) ? One of the top young Scrabble players in the country has been kicked out of the game's national championship tournament in Florida after he was caught hiding blank letter tiles, organizers said Tuesday.

John D. Williams, Jr., executive director of the National Scrabble Association, said that a male player was ejected from the 350-player event in Round 24 of the 28-round event.

The cheating was spotted by a player at a nearby table, who noticed the ejected player conceal a pair of blank tiles by dropping them on the floor, organizers said. Blank tiles can be used as wild card letters. When confronted by the tournament director, he admitted to it, organizers said.

Williams, who has served as executive director for 25 years and co-authored a book on the popular Hasbro board game in 1993, said this was the first incident of cheating at a national tournament. However, he said it's been known to occur at smaller, regional events.

"It does happen no matter what. People will try to do this," he said. "It's the first time it's happened in a venue this big though. It's unfortunate. The Scrabble world is abuzz. The Internet is abuzz."

Williams would not identify the player by name or age because he's a minor. There are four divisions and he was competing in Division 3.

He said Division 3 is equal to "any great living-room player out there."

In Scrabble matches, players accumulate points during one-on-one matches by pulling random letter tiles from a bag of 100 and trying to create words.

A total of 98 tiles have letters on them and two are blank. Blank tiles can be used as wild card letters to complete words.

The ejected player had concluded a previous game and never reinserted the blank tiles into his bag in an attempt to use them at his discretion in the next game, organizers said.

Players in the national tournament format play multiple matches over the five-day event. The winner is determined by a combination of their overall record against other players and the cumulative point spread over the entire tournament.

The ejected player forfeited all of his wins.

Williams said there is usually "good self-policing in the Scrabble world" as players try to protect the integrity of statistics on the competitive circuit.

That's because national events draw young players to seniors. The leader entering Wednesday's final day of competition is National and Scrabble All-Star Champion David Gibson, a 61-year-old math teacher from Spartanburg, S.C.

Jason Keller, 30, and nine-time Jeopardy champion from New Jersey, is in fourth place.

The winner receives the $10,000 top prize.

"It gets pretty deep. We're one step away from drug testing," Williams joked.

While Williams said this was the first time the national tournament has dealt with scandal, the incident could shine a brighter light on other advantages players have been known to employ.

Even before Tuesday's cheating ejection it was well-known that some players take minerals known as "alleged brain boosters."

"But no steroids so far," Williams quipped.

Thrustmaster unveils Ferrari Vibration GT Cockpit 458 Italia Edition and Ferarri gamepad for Xbox 360, we go hands on

It's been almost a year since Thrustmaster rolled out its first replica Ferrari 458 Italia racing wheel and pedal set for Xbox 360, and the company's finally outed its successor: the Ferrari Vibration GT Cockpit 458 Italia Edition. Like its elder, the GT Cockpit has an 11.2-inch replica of the Ferrari 458 Italia's steering wheel, with A,B, X and Y buttons in place of turn signals and an Engine Start button that's actually a d-pad. It also sports brushed metal paddle shifters and 16-bit resolution to ensure a realistic digital driving experience. However, the new wheel is attached to a base sporting a pair of stamped steel pedals via an adjustable steering column. The whole thing has metal underpinnings and weighs 22 pounds to provide stability as you virtually race around Sebring or Laguna Seca. Plus, it's foldable, so you can easily stow it out of the way when you're not doing your best Stig impersonation.

In addition to the GT Cockpit, Thrustmaster has also outed the GPX LightBack Ferrari F1 Edition Gamepad. It largely looks like a standard corded 360 controller, with a Ferrari-style white and red paint job (replete with racing sponsor logos), backlit thumbsticks and two rows of LEDs at the top of the controller. The LEDs are programmed to provide visual indicators for engine speed or braking power, and the thumbsticks have been tweaked to be more precise than those on other available 360 gamepads. The F1 gamepad's up for pre-order today for $49.99, and the GT Cockpit can be yours in September for $300. Wanna know more? Check out our hands (and feet)-on impressions after the break.

Science fiction satirist Harry Harrison has died

LONDON (AP) ? American author Harry Harrison, whose space-age spoofs delighted generations of science fiction fans, has died, a friend said Wednesday. He was 87.

Irish sci-fi writer Michael Carroll said in a telephone interview that he learned of Harrison's passing from the author's daughter, Moira, earlier in the day. He said Harrison died in southern England, but didn't have much further detail.

Harrison was a prolific writer whose works ranged from tongue-in-cheek inter-galactic action romps to dystopian fantasies, with detours through children's stories and shambolic crime capers. Carroll said most of the works delivered a stream of sly humor with a big bucket of action.

"Imagine 'Pirates of the Caribbean' or 'Raiders of the Lost Ark,' and picture them as science fiction novels," he said. "They're rip-roaring adventures, but they're stories with a lot of heart."

Harrison was best known for his "Stainless Steel Rat" series, starring the free-spirited anti-hero Slippery Jim DiGriz, a quick-witted conman who travels the universe swindling humans, aliens and robots alike. His 1966 work, "Make Room! Make Room!" ? a sci-fi take on the horrors of overpopulation ? inspired the 1973 film "Soylent Green" starring Charlton Heston.

Born in Stamford, Connecticut, in 1925, Harrison served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II before working freelance as a commercial artist and eventually embarking on a long career as one of science fiction's leading writers.

Carroll, who helps maintain Harrison's website, said he remembers laughing so hard he almost choked when he read one of Harrison's books as a teenager. He later met his hero at a book signing in Dublin, and said that the two remained friends ever since. Harrison could be difficult, he said, explaining that the American did not "suffer fools gladly" and "absolutely savaged" Carroll's first attempt at a novel.

But Carroll said his writing was the better for it, and that Harrison was kind and generous to his friends.

"He had a gruff manner, but when you got to know him he was a sweetheart," he said.

Harrison is survived by Moira and a son, Todd. Harrison's wife, Joan, died in 2002.

Lower profit claims go up in smoke - Mail & Guardian Online

Numerous stakeholders in South Africa have made their voices heard since the ?publication of the ?regulations that will ban all indoor smoking in public places and restrict it in public outdoor areas.

Anti-tobacco activists have made it clear that these regulations are not aimed at punishing smokers, but to protect nonsmokers.

Last week various public health organisations responded to the proposed regulations that form part of the Tobacco Products Control Act.

These regulations came under attack from industry ?bodies, some with clear connections to the tobacco industry. The Free Market Foundation ? which counts British American Tobacco and South Africa's tobacco kingpin, Johann Rupert, as its supporters ? and the Tobacco Institute of South Africa claimed the regulations infringed on the rights of smokers and would have a negative economic effect on restaurants, casinos and other businesses in the hospitality industry.

Leon Louw of the Free Market Foundation accused the ?government of trespassing on smokers' constitutional rights and reducing individual autonomy.

"It is a vicious assault on other people's choices and lifestyles by anti-tobacco fanatics and nicotine Nazis," Louw said in an equally vicious statement.

Regulations
The regulations would in effect ban smoking indoors and restrict outdoor smoking in public areas. Businesses such as restaurants or bars would not be allowed to have any smoking areas, indoors or ?outdoors, and smoking would not be allowed at outdoor gatherings, on beaches and in parks, except in designated smoking areas. No ?smoking would be allowed within 10m of a doorway or window.

The regulations are expected to be adopted within a few months, after which some time will be allowed for their implementation.

At last week's press briefing, anti-tobacco activist Dr Yussuf Saloojee was unequivocal that, every day, millions of people in South Africa were still exposed to tobacco smoke against their will.

Official statistics paint a bleak picture. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that, worldwide, smoking kills six million people a year,? of whom a staggering 600000 are nonsmokers who die from diseases caused by exposure to second-hand smoke. Various studies have shown that patrons are still exposed to smoke in restaurants despite separate smoking areas.

"There is an old saying: having smoking and nonsmoking areas in the same air space is like having a peeing and a non-peeing area in a pool ? it just doesn't work," said Saloojee, executive director of the National Council Against Smoking.

University of Pretoria academic Professor Lekan Ayo-Yusuf is clear that a 100% smoking ban is the only way to eliminate indoor exposure to second-hand smoke. Ayo-Yusuf, who conducted research on the air quality of Pretoria restaurants, found high ?levels of second-hand tobacco smoke in ?nonsmoking areas.

The level of tobacco smoke considered safe is by the WHO is 25g/m3, but the ?average level of tobacco smoke at the eight restaurants studied was 304g/m3 and there were levels as high as 940g/m3. This means that the levels were between 12 and 40 times higher than recommended.

"Separation of smokers from ?nonsmokers, ventilation systems, air cleaning and filtration are all ?ineffective strategies to eliminate second-hand smoke exposure and its harmful effects," said Ayo-Yusuf.

Smokers' rights
Louw's attack prompted last week's gathering of public health organisations.

Moise Muzigaba of the Heart and Stroke Foundation said people had a right to smoke, but they had to keep in mind that "if you are sitting next to me, you are taking away my right to clean air".

Joel Perry of the Cancer Association of South Africa agreed that it was not about the individual saying "you are restricting my right to smoke".

?"You are dealing with the tobacco industry and they are engaging various role players, lobbying them to shape legislation and restrict governments from passing public health regulations all around the world," Perry said.

Professor Mac Lukhele, president of the South African Medical Association, said the organisation had recommended bans on smoking and tobacco advertising as far back as 50 years ago.

Saloojee said that, because "the apartheid government supported the tobacco industry", bans had been delayed. Rembrandt was a leading business group in South Africa and the apartheid government wanted to support Afrikaner business at the expense of public health.

"The first Tobacco Products Control Act was only introduced 30 years after the South African Medical Association asked for regulation in 1993, when the transition to democracy was happening," said Saloojee.

Effect on economy
The main objection of the Tobacco Institute of South Africa and the Free Market Foundation have to the new law is the supposed financial effect it would have on the hospitality industry, an objection that has surfaced every time the industry has been under threat. The two groups have claimed that restaurants and bars will lose business if smoking is banned.

However, Professor Corn? van Walbeeck of the University of Cape Town disputed this and made available evidence from South Africa and other countries that showed it was untrue.

"If you listen to the hospitality and tobacco industries, one would think that all hell would break lose if the legislation was passed," said Van Walbeeck.

In 2004, he and his colleagues ?conducted a study on how the 2001 ban on smoking in public places, which allowed for enclosed smoking areas, affected the hospitality industry.

They found that 59.3% of more than 1000 restaurant owners interviewed in their study said that the new smoking legislation had no effect whatsoever on their revenue, and one in five (21.7%) thought it actually contributed to a rise in revenue. The remaining 19% felt the new regulations had a negative financial effect. The study also found that both nonsmokers and smokers had received the new legislation well.

Another University of Cape Town study that scrutinised restaurants' turnover for the same period found no evidence that profits had decreased after the imposition of the clean indoor air legislation in 2001.

"Based on international and South African research, there is no reason to believe that the proposed regulations will have a detrimental impact on the restaurant industry," said Van Walbeeck.

Saloojee said the proposed regulations made business sense, because more than 80% of South Africans were nonsmokers.

"People don't go to restaurants to smoke. To cater for the majority tends to be beneficial to your business," he said.

iPhone Spy Software

There are many instances when a parent or employer would want to keep track of an iPhone that they?ve issued to their child or employee. There are plenty of things that can go wrong with the investment in communication that the iPhone offers, and responsible people like to know where their things are and what is being done with them.

The computing power of the iPhone surpasses any portable technology ever available. The fact that these things are capable of being connected to the internet at virtually any time and are somewhat tied to a bank account can cause concern when purchasing a phone and paying for someone else to use it.

Along with issuing an iPhone, there are concerns about the recipient?s change in focus. Will an employee use their phone responsibly, or waste company time using it as a toy or embellishing in conflicts of interest? Is a child going to use the phone at school, late at night, or use the phone to engage in illicit activities?

There is also concern about the iPhone becoming lost or stolen. Most people plan on waiting until the problem arises, and then go through the steps of purchasing a new phone. At the same time, any information on the old phone may be out there and in the hands of a dangerous person.

There is an easy solution that focuses on all of these concerns, and it is software designed for parents and employers so that they can keep track of their iPhones, it is often referred to as iPhone Spy Software. Monitoring software for iPhones has been coined this phrase due to its subtle nature and high-efficiency in keeping track of an iPhone for a parent or employer.

With iPhone spy software, a parent or employer can expect to read every text sent or received, every iMessage, view very call made, GPS locations, URLs or websites visited, and for this service to work on their phone any and every time the phone is on without interfering with the phones? operation or functionality, and without being discovered and thwarted by the user.

With Mobile Spy, you purchase a software subscription service which allows you to track, monitor, and record many aspects of your iPhone secretly through a secure online web panel where you access your account from anywhere with an internet connection after the software has been installed to the phone you?re monitoring.

Mobile Spy is the original iPhone Spy software, it stays current with iOS updates, and provides new features that you would expect from an industry leader in iPhone spy software products. With Mobile Spy, you can block certain applications from running, and you can purchase an add-on which would even allow you to view the iPhone?s screen LIVE from anywhere to make sure the iPhone is being used properly.

Whether you?re using it on your own phone to keep track of your phone and data, or you?re using it on the phone you?ve issued your child or employee, you want the best iPhone spy software that won?t fail when you need it most.

Blasts in Aleppo, Damascus as US pushes for regime fall

Syrian forces shelled rebels in the battle-scarred city of Aleppo Sunday and gunfire was heard in Damascus, as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called for the regime's downfall to be speeded up.

The Shaar, Tariq al-Bab, Sakhur, Hanano and Bustan al-Qasr neighbourhoods all came under bombardment, as troops pressed a ground offensive they launched on Wednesday the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

An army colonel was killed in an assault by rebels in the Safira district, the Britain-based watchdog said.

In the capital Damascus, gunfire was reported in the Qadam neighbourhood.

Heavy explosions were heard in the Damascus suburb of Harasta, the Observatory said. Elsewhere in the province, machinegun fire was heard in the town of Al-Tal, where 15 civilians were killed in shelling and clashes on Saturday as troops tried to regain control from rebels.

They were among 148 people killed across Syria on Saturday -- 85 civilians, 20 rebels and 43 soldiers, the Observatory said.

A rebel commander insisted his fighters were still putting up strong resistance around Salaheddin.

"Fierce fighting has continued without respite for the past 24 hours as the army tries to push us out of the neighbourhood," Abdel Qader Saleh told AFP by telephone.

The Local Coordination Committees, a network of activists on the ground, reported "intense and indiscriminate bombardment by aircraft flying over Sakhur and Hanano districts" of Aleppo, Syria's commercial capital.

Troops backed by artillery stormed Salaheddin on Wednesday in the first stage of an offensive to recapture areas of the northern city taken by the rebels since July 20.

In the face of the escalating violence, Clinton said in Turkey the "number one goal" of Washington and Ankara was to hasten the end of President Bashar al-Assad's regime and stop the bloodshed.

"We are continuing to increase pressure from outside," she told reporters in Istanbul after meeting Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and Syrian opposition activists.

"Yesterday in Washington we announced sanctions designed to expose and disrupt the links between Iran, Hezbollah and Syria that prolong the life of the Assad regime."

Washington on Friday announced sanctions against Syrian state oil company Sytrol for trading with Iran, in a bid to starve both Tehran and Damascus of much-needed revenue.

The US Treasury also said it was adding the Iran- and Syria-backed Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah to a blacklist of organisations targeted under Syria-related sanctions.

The move explicitly ties the group to the violence in Syria, where Assad is attempting to put down a 17-month revolt that has reportedly killed more than 21,000 people.

But the violence raged on with blasts in Damascus Saturday that triggered panic among residents.

Official SANA news agency said "armed terrorists" blew up a bomb in Marje district and later "opened fire indiscriminately to terrorise civilians."

But a militant said "fighters of the (rebel) Free Syrian Army fired an RPG on a security convoy near Victoria Bridge" and later exchanged fire with government forces.

Videos uploaded by activists on the Internet showed panicked residents running in the streets and others blowing the horns of their cars to force traffic to move.

Fighting was also reported in Tadamun, another Damascus area, where there were "fierce clashes between the Free Syrian Army and the regime forces," said the Local Coordination Committees.

With the unrelenting violence, Arab foreign ministers are to hold emergency talks in Saudi Arabia on Sunday to discuss the conflict and a replacement for international mediator Kofi Annan, who quit in frustration over a failed peace plan.

World powers are expected to name veteran Algerian diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi as the new UN-Arab League envoy for Syria early next week.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is pushing for a UN presence in Syria after its observer mission in the country expires on August 19 and has suggested options for an "effective and flexible presence," a diplomat said in New York on Saturday.

The mission was deployed in April to oversee a peace plan, which should have begun with a ceasefire that never took hold and in mid-June, the observers suspended patrols as fighting intensified.

The Security Council is to debate the future of the mission on Thursday.

On the humanitarian front, the United States, Canada pledged new funds for Syrian refugees who fled the violence in their country while France sent a cargo plane to Jordan with tonnes of aid for those forced to flee.

Clinton announced an additional $5.5 million in aid while in Turkey, while Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird said his country was providing Jordan with $6.5 million to meet the needs of the refugees.

Turkey is currently home to some 55,000 refugees living in camps along the Syrian border and Jordan is hosting more than 150,000 Syrians.

In Lebanon, another neighbour where tensions have spilled over, the military prosecutor general accused Syrian security chief General Ali Mamluk and former Lebanese minister Michel Samaha of planning attacks.

A judicial source said they were "suspected of forming a group to provoke sectarian killings and terrorist acts using explosives, which were transported and stored by Michel Samaha."

Why can't the cost of flood insurance rise Felix Salmon | QnA Poker ...

has a huge report on the the National Flood Insurance Program ? something which namely a veritable bucket of fail. In a nutshell, it undercuts personal insurers plus therefore namely the only game amid town; it insures only a small minority of homeowners; plus it loses gobs of buck In September 2005,http://dmz67890.216.1885858.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=59582, the NFIP was $1.5 billion in hock to the federal government; namely digit has now ballooned apt $21 billion,????? ????,plus is certain apt ascend beyond.

93% Neil Young Journeys

All Critics (42) | Top Critics (20) | Fresh (39) | Rotten (3)

"Journeys" is simply a trip most need not take.

I'd say the movie does a fine job of completing the trilogy, but I wouldn't be surprised if Demme and Young have more in them yet.

Like Young, Demme often takes an iconoclastic route. This is in part a concert film, yes, but not a traditional one.

Forget Crosby, Stills and Nash and maybe even Crazy Horse. Jonathan Demme might be Neil Young's ultimate collaborator.

As a songwriter, Young can still deliver: one of the best tunes here is a lovely, piano-propelled number, "Leia," that he hasn't even released yet.

The wartsy antipode of Katy Perry: Part of Me, with an intimacy and intensity bordering on the overwhelming.

A mesmerizing and intimate visit with a performer who is identified most closely with rock 'n' roll, but whose artistic curiosity has taken him in myriad directions musically throughout his 40-plus-year career.

Neil Young Journeys does for some of us what a rare film can do - it revives and renews our spirit. Neil Young and Jonathan Demme. Heart and soul. Wisdom and age. Fire and ashes. Lightning and thunder.

For fans, Journeys is like that box set of uneven rarities that they simply must own. For casual friends, it's 90 minutes in good company. For the rest - ho-hum.

An unusually fulsome tribute to the singer-songwriter from the director of The Silence of the Lambs.

On its own terms, "Neil Young Journeys" is an enjoyable concert film of a solo show in Toronto, interspersed with memories of his Canadian boyhood.

The concert camera work is sometimes a little tight for comfort (not really interested in Young's bridge work), though it adds to the intensity.

Movie fans probably don't need to hear him sing "Ohio" again, but "Neil Young Journeys" -- Jonathan Demme's second Young doc, if you're counting -- does have some new wrinkles.

In a sense, this film finishes a cycle that began with the homey and impressive "Neil Young: Heart of Gold" and continued with the raucous "Neil Young Trunk Show" of 2009.

"Look at Mother Nature on the run..."

A portrait of a true musical legend who is equally fascinating both onstage and off.

'Heart of Gold' was a great concert film, and 'Journeys' doesn't match it. BHut on its own it's a highly enjoyable ninety minutes of music and droll talk.

The words 'Neil Young in concert' mean plenty to some people and little to others; if you're in the plenty category, you'll want to see this.

Are You Considering adding a Swimmin Pool? | Lake Charles Real ...

Once upon a time the beginning of Summer in Southwest Louisiana was bright and sunny and the grass was green!??? Summer is the prime time of year? when new construction breaks ground, landscapers and yard crews are busy and home owners plan improvement projects !? I fall into the last category of home improvement.? This is my story and timeline of installing a swimming pool during the summer of 2012.

Our pool contractor said? prime pool digging time is June with the sunny summer, so we planned to begin? our pool on June 19.? Of course it rained on June 19 making the yard soggy but the contractor said he could overcome that with plywood boards?.so the next day we began will full speed ahead.? ? The project began in a week of record breaking HOT temperatures and sunshine.

The pool was dug in one day on June 20

The access path to the backyard involved traveling across the front yard to dump the loads of dirt? from the dig.

On Day 2 the plumbing lines and Re-Bar is laid

The gunite is sprayed in Day 3.? Then we had to wait a week? to give the gunite time to set up.

A week later after the 4th of July the? brick couping was installed and then work halted and the rain began.? While the rest of the country was burning up Southwest Louisiana had record breaking rains every day turning our backyard into a muddy mess.

This is my dog Rosie just looking for a spot of grass but alas?it is all mud

As it continued to rain the pool collected water

After 10 days of rain with record accumulation, we waited for a dry forecast to? finish the waterline tile and proceed with the? next phase of pouring the concrete.?? First the? pool? had to be drained of all the rain water accumulated and the decking? had to be formed for the concrete.? The decking was formed on July 24 and the pool was drained on July 24-25.

Due to the weather delays and other jobs before us, we had to wait for concrete.? Our concrete arrived on? Saturday July 28.

Due to the lot size the concrete truck could not gain access to the backyard.? The narrow construction path between houses had become muddy from the rain.? The concrete? would have to be poured? into wheel barrels and delivered to the backyard one load at a time.? Workers laid boards to make a? clean accessible pathway!

Notice the blue sky while the concrete is being? poured and? leveled?..Just after the last section of concrete was poured, dark clouds formed and a summer rainstorm came out of no where!

On July 30-31 With all the rainwater drained out of the pool,? debris removed and pool was ready for the final stage of the pool construction?-the plastering.

The plaster crew arrived on Wednesday August 1.?? Plastering is an interesting process to watch, the workers wear special boots with spikes to walk on the bottom of the pool. ?? A crew of workers hand trowel the plaster finish inside the pool.? There is a total of 3 layers applied smoothly all hand troweled!

The 3rd and final layer of plaster

The plaster dries quickly and within 3 hours your pool is ready to be filled with water!

Our Pool began to fill on August 1? with the garden hose. ?? Within 48 hours the pool? filled and was ready for the backwashing with the installed pump and chemicals added.? Lake Charles City Water has a high concentration of iron deposits so the sediment created is removed through the pool filtration and backwashing process.? The plumbing lines that were laid in the beginning will be flushed out also in this process. (we had alot of rain and mud during the construction) It takes about 2-3 days of this rinse and repeat? cycle/process before the water will be clear blue and respond to the chemicals added.

READY TO SWIM on Friday August 3 !!

Chemicals were added daily and you can see the water transform from a shade of green to a clear blue within 3 days.

?From start to finish our pool was completed in 45 days (6 weeks) and that includes all the rain delay.?? Planet Pools in Lake Charles, LA installed our salt water pool for us.? Paul Glasco and his crews? had to overcome alot of obstacles during the process and he is to be commended for achieving a beautiful result!?? My advice to anyone wanting to put a swimming pool in, is to first consider your lot size and what space you have to work with.? Secondly, be patient and allow for weather changes.? We live in Southwest Louisiana where? showers can be a daily occurrence!

In the end a swimming pool will provide hours of enjoyment and a wonderful place for entertaining.? Your dogs will? also get accustomed to the new surrounding!

If you are searching for a home with a pool in Southwest Louisiana I can assist you with your home search!? Contact me to get set up on an automated email search of Lake Charles Homes for Sale with Pools!

Commerical Real Estate: Tips You Need To Know | Lab247

Industrial and commercial properties constantly come to market, but don?t get the highlighted attention or preferential treatment that residential homes do. The advice presented in the following article will enlighten you on how to find your way through the real estate market to locate these industrial and commercial properties.

Find out more about net operating income. In order to be successful, the resulting number must be positive.

Think about using feng shui to enhance your commercial properties and business. This will create larger open spaces with less clutter and will give a more attractive flow for potential buyers.

Try sending a newsletter about your commercial property, or post fresh content on a networking site. It is important to keep in touch with your contacts, for they can be beneficial to you in the future.

When you are contemplating investing in commercial real estate, be mindful of the relationship between yourself, investors, and private lending institutions. For example, commercial real estate commonly sells without being listed. However, the larger your network, the greater your savvy, and the more likely you are to be informed about outstanding opportunities.

There are numerous ways to save money on the costs associated with cleaning up a property. You are the one that is responsible for clean up if you own part of the property. The costs for environmental cleanup and proper waste disposal can be exceedingly high. Get a report of the environment from a company that specializes in it. This costs a lot but it can end up saving you a lot.

Before buying, make sure that you consult a tax adviser for assistance. A tax adviser will be able to tell you how much the buildings are going to cost you and how much of your income is going to be taxable. Let your adviser help you find a building that won?t require you to pay too much in taxes.

If you are new to investing, focus on one investment type at a time. For example, concentrate your efforts on working with a single type of property. It?s good to find a niche and do very, very well at it rather than flitting from one investment type to another without much success.

Watch for motivated sellers. Finding them should be your goal, particularly the ones most ready to offer you a below market deal. The best way to make money in real estate is if you find that good deal, so keep an eye out for the seller who is motivated.

Before choosing a real estate broker, you need to know how they negotiate. Find out about their experience and training. When choosing a real estate broker, make sure that they are ethical when doing business. Ask to see the broker?s portfolio. He should be able to provide you examples of successful negotiations. Also ask the broker to give you an example of an unsuccessful negotiation and explain what he learned from the experience.

It is a far lengthier, and more complicated, process to purchase a commercial property than a residential one. The fact is that commercial real estate brings in a higher return, therefore the process must be more intense.

Those who invest in commercial real estate should be aware that higher-than-usual inflation can wreck and otherwise-good investment. Many leases used to include clauses to protect investors from inflation that would adjust the lease according to the CPI (Consumer Price Index). Unfortunately, in today?s market, this practice is very seldom used. This can make you defenseless against the consequences of inflation.

Finding your optimum commercial real estate property will only see you half way through this process. A little information goes a long way.

Don't stand so close to me and other elevator don'ts

Astra Production / Getty Images stock

When will this awkward elevator ride be over?

By Allison Linn, TODAY

The office elevator is already kind of an awkward place. Here?s how you can make it more awkward for everyone else:

  • Talk on your cell phone.
  • Don?t hold the door for others
  • Stand too close to everyone else even when the elevator isn?t crowded.

A new survey from CareerBuilder finds that those are the most ?- but by no means only ?- things that annoy co-workers during the ride up to the office or down to the street. More than three in 10 of the 3,800 workers surveyed identified them as the most annoying habits they commonly see.

Other popular elevator peeves included squeezing into an already crowded elevator, not stepping off to let other people out and holding the doors open for an extended period of time.

Clearly, elevator riders are a finicky bunch -- or normally easygoing people become finicky once they enter that small, enclosed space. Don?t hold the doors and you?ll annoy people. Hold the doors and you?ll annoy people.

CareerBuilder also asked workers to tell them the weirdest things they'd seen in the office elevator. They included clipping nails --inappropriate in all office locales, according to many of our readers -- and changing a diaper. Eww.

May we suggest taking the stairs instead?

What's the most annoying thing your co-workers do during elevator rides?

Miami offers finance staff shakeup to SEC

MIAMI (Reuters) - Miami is offering to shake up its financial staff as part of a proposal to the Securities and Exchange Commission to settle looming civil securities-fraud charges tied to bond deals.

The federal regulator last month told the city that its Miami lawyers planned to recommend to top SEC officials that civil action such as fines or injunctions be taken against the city for shifting money among capital and operating accounts.

By doing that, the SEC staff concluded, Miami had misled investors about the city's fiscal health during tax-free bond sales carried out when Florida was weathering the worst of a housing bust, which is still dragging on local governments.

Ivan Harris, an outside attorney for Miami, said in a letter to the SEC the city had followed commonly accepted accounting and disclosure practices in moving the funds in the fiscal 2007 and 2008 city budgets. However, he added, the city was willing to make reforms.

Miami, if the SEC agreed, would restructure its financial staff under a chief financial officer, craft detailed procedures for future internal fund transfers and bolster the city's auditing committee, Harris said in the letter dated Monday.

SEC officials should issue a detailed report on how Miami should handle its internal fund transfers, rather than bring fraud charges, Harris said.

"A fraud case against the city ... would do nothing more than sanction a government entity that adhered to relevant accounting principles and made comprehensive disclosures," Harris said.

This is a second high-profile clash between the SEC and Miami, which was hit last month by a caution from Moody's Investors Service that it may downgrade ratings on $669 million of city bonds. The SEC determined in 2001 that the city had tapped the capital budget to firm up its general fund.

The SEC, whose Miami officials were not immediately available to comment, is also currently investigating city bonds used to help build the Marlins Ballpark opened this year.
