Commit to being Committed

03 Apr 2012

Brian, The GOOD Intern Experience

Today I want to talk about the much avoided ?C? word, commitment.? Commitment is imperative to any part of success because nothing can be carried out unless one is fully committed.? ?In relationships men tend to be seen as commitment-phobes by women.? Women emphasize the importance of commitment because they realize that commitment is the integral part to the success to their relationship.? I don?t blame them though, who would want to be in a relationship with a guy that?s only committed anywhere from 30-70% of the time?

Losing weight has never been much of an issue for me; frankly, I?ve never had to really try.? For the first time in my life I made a resolution to lose 15-20 lbs. in 2012.? This has been by far one of the hardest things I?ve ever done.? It?s like the healthier I eat the more I want to eat junk food.? Sometimes I fall off my diet but I realize that I didn?t gain the weight all in one day and accordingly I?m not going to lose it all in one day either.? It?s the accumulation of the weeks on end that I commit to working out and dieting that is leading me to my goal of having a fit body.? The results are starting to show and my commitment to achieving my goal prevails 100% of the time, but if I lose my commitment, I?m sure to know that failure is eminent.

Being committed brings out a certainty that wouldn?t be perceived if one wasn?t.? This is true to many aspects of performing.? Have you noticed the contestants on American Idol that are usually laughed at when they audition?? The commonality is that they?re uncertain of themselves, hesitant, lack confidence, and do not commit in full to their audition and are usually interrupted and told to stop.? Without being committed your chances for success are nil.

One could as well argue that being committed is what acting is all about, being committed to a moment, to reaction, to feeling, to instinct and this will allow one to commit to a role.? Being a committed to a role is a essential part to what makes the character come alive.? An actor has to lose oneself and fully envelop a character, forgetting who they are in reality.? An actor whom I highly admire for doing this is Daniel Day-Lewis.? He is known for embodying his characters from start to finish upon completing a movie, even while off stage.? His commitments to his roles are exemplified time and time again through his performances.? Of course every actor must find their own way of staying committed to their roles but doing this is a commitment in itself.? An actor must work all the time to perfect their craft but being committed to doing so is the only way in achieving this.? To continually progress, develop and grow should be a goal for any artist.

This concept of commitment is illustrated in all aspects in obtaining and successfully completing any goal.? Whether it be having a good relationship, losing weight, singing or performing to being/becoming a great actor.? So stay committed to being committed you?ll be that much closer to getting to where you want to go, but you?ll never reach your destination without being so.
